The feather on this pen is decoration, and it is worth saying so plainly before anything else. What you are writing with is a gold-toned metal dip pen; the white quill is mounted on top of it, held at the join by a small cast owl. It is not a hollow quill that you cut and sharpen yourself — the nib at the bottom does the writing, and the feather is what makes it look like something out of a library.

Five nibs come with it. One is already fitted at the tip and four more sit in their own slots down the side of the card. They pull out and push in by friction, so changing one takes a moment: ease the old nib out, slide the new one into the same collar, and write. Spares matter on a dip pen because steel nibs are consumable — ink corrodes them slowly and a dropped pen lands on its point.

It arrives mounted on a printed display card, gold-toned with an ornamental border, the words Feather pen across the top and Dip Pen on the banner beneath. That card is why this makes an easy gift: nothing needs wrapping, and it can be given, opened and used the same evening as long as there is ink in the house.

The feather colour varies. This model is sold as a multicolour range, so the quill that reaches you may be white as in our photographs or another shade from the same batch. Ink is not included. It is a dip pen, so a bottle of ordinary calligraphy or fountain-pen ink is what you need alongside it. Dip the nib to the base of the shoulder, touch the surplus off against the neck of the bottle, and wipe the nib dry when you stop so it lasts.
