Thirty millimetres is a big cake, and it is the reason this box is worth more than the cheapest paint tray on the shelf. A wide cake gives a child's brush somewhere to land. Small pans get gouged, muddied and cross-contaminated within a week because a loaded brush cannot fit without touching its neighbours; a 30 mm face takes the same brush cleanly and keeps its colour.

The twelve run white, orange, yellow, deep yellow, blue and orange-red along the back row, then red, cyan, purple, green, dark green and black along the front. There is a white in the tray as well as the tube, and a proper black, so a child can lighten and darken without being told to just add more water.

Giotto is made by FILA, whose mark and the line Since 1920 sit at the foot of the carton, and the box carries a QUALITY FOR KIDS flash in the corner. That is the maker's own wording. What we can tell you from the tray itself is that it is one moulded piece with the brush and lid built in, which is the part that survives a school bag.
