The Greatnice GTS-2116 is a small wireless speaker that arrives with its own wireless microphone, so a phone, a playlist and someone who loves to sing are all it takes to start a karaoke night at home. The song plays through the speaker, the singer holds the mic, and there is no cable running between the two.

The box lists a 3 inch speaker driver and 5W of output. That is enough sound to fill a bedroom, a drawing room or a small family gathering, and it is honest to say what it is not: a 5W speaker is not a stage or wedding sound system. For a child's birthday, a dholki practice in the lounge or a sing-along with cousins, it is the right size.

Music reaches it three ways. Pair a phone or tablet wirelessly and play from up to 10 metres away, as printed on the box. Or push in a USB stick or an SD card of up to 32GB and it plays the songs without a phone at all. It also has an FM radio. The buttons sit on a panel on top: previous, play and pause, next, and an M button for changing mode.

The voice changer is the part children find first. It changes the voice coming through the microphone, so a song can come out sounding funny, and the same mic is handy for little speeches, poems and pretend radio shows. Around the speaker cone, rings of blue LED lights glow through the grille while it plays.

Power comes from a 500mAh rechargeable battery. It charges from the USB cable in the box, from any 5V phone charger or laptop port, and the box gives a charging time of 2 to 3 hours. Play time is rated at up to 1 hour at full volume, so for a long evening keep it near a charger.

The body measures 9.9 x 7.8 x 14.1 cm, small enough to carry from room to room in one hand.
