Switch off the big light, switch on this torch, and a bright round cartoon picture appears on the bedroom wall. It is a projector torch for children: in place of a plain beam it shines a picture from a small slide disc fitted into its head, so a wall, a ceiling or the page of a book becomes a screen.

Three picture discs come with it, and each disc carries eight pictures, so there are 24 pictures to go through. Fit a disc into the head, shine the torch at the wall and turn to the next picture; when the eight are done, swap in the next disc. The discs are small, flat and coloured, and they are easy for a parent to keep in a pocket or a drawer.

It turns bedtime into story time. Parents shine a picture and make up a story to go with it, children name what they see and guess the next one, and a nervous child finds a dark room friendlier with a familiar picture on the wall. On a power cut evening it is the toy every cousin wants a turn with.

The torch is shaped for a small hand, with a slide switch on the handle, flower prints along the grip and a loop at the end for a cord. The photos show it in purple with pink trim, projecting animal pictures; the colour is confirmed on WhatsApp with your order.

We suggest it from 3 years, with an adult nearby for the youngest, as the picture discs are small parts. Never shine any torch straight into someone's eyes; the pictures are meant for walls and ceilings.
