This light sword is two toys in one. In axe form the glowing head sits across the top of the handle like a battle axe. One click swings the head round its gear hub until the blade lines up with the grip, and the same toy is now a straight sword. The box calls it the Shadow 2-in-1 Sword-Axe, and it turns back into an axe just as quickly.

The head is black, framed by a translucent edge that lights up in shifting colours, from icy blue to pink and green. A row of glowing dots and two H marks run along the blade, and a small round window near the tip glows as well, so the whole outline shows up in a dimmed room.

Add a little water and it sprays a fine mist from a nozzle beside the gear hub. The cloud drifts through the lit edge and picks up its colour, which is why shops call this kind of toy a smoke sword. It is plain water mist, with no smoke and no smell. Sound effects play along with the lights, so every battle has a soundtrack.

At about 43 cm, or 16.9 inches, it is a one-hand size for a child. The grip has a dotted panel and a textured thumb rest, and the end of the handle is an open hexagonal pommel. It charges by USB from a built-in battery, so there are no AA cells to keep buying.
