This little robot has the friendliest face in the toy box: a black screen with two big eyes and a smile, headphone-style ears with little antennas, and a signal symbol on its chest. It stands 11 cm tall on a chunky base, about the size of a grown-up's hand, so even a toddler can grab it and get it moving.

It runs on inertia, which is a friction motor by another name. Push the robot forward along the floor a few times, let go, and it rolls away on its own. As it goes, its body sways from side to side and its black arms swing, so it looks as if it is marching across the room rather than just rolling.

There are no batteries, no switch and no remote. That means it cannot run flat before a birthday, there are no cells for small fingers to get at, and it is ready to play the moment it comes out of the parcel. A tiled or marble floor gives the best run.

Choose yellow, white, red or blue. Each colour has the same black face, ears and arms with blue line details on the body, and each robot is sold on its own at Rs. 750. Two robots in different colours are perfect for a race between brothers and sisters, and four make a whole robot team.

We suggest it from 3 years. It is a simple, sturdy first robot for young children; children who want a robot that talks, dances or follows a remote will need a battery-powered robot, which this is not.
