A wide flat is the brush nobody buys until they need it, and then nothing else will do. Covering a background, laying a wash across a sheet, priming a board with gesso, blocking in a sky — all of those are one-stroke jobs with a broad brush and twenty-stroke jobs with a size 12. Worse, twenty strokes with a small brush leave twenty visible edges where the paint dried between passes, and a background painted that way never looks flat however careful you were.

The six numbered brushes cover everything under that. The 2 and 4 do detail, the 6 and 8 do most ordinary work, and the 10 and 12 fill middle-sized shapes. Between them and the wide flat there is no size gap a school project or a hobby canvas will run into.

The card names three mediums — water colour, acrylic and oil — which is the honest range for a synthetic brush at this price. Synthetic filament handles acrylic better than natural hair does, because acrylic is hard on hair and a synthetic head recovers its shape after a stroke instead of going limp.
