A flat is not a general-purpose brush and it is not trying to be. It does two things a round cannot. Held flat it lays an even band of colour with no ridge down the middle, which is how a background or a large area gets covered without streaks. Held on its edge it draws a line as straight and thin as the width of the metal — the cleanest straight edge you can make without masking tape.

That makes it the shape for anything with straight sides. Charts and posters, a painted border, the edge where sky meets a rooftop, block lettering, backgrounds behind a subject, the flat planes of a building in an architectural study. School and college project work is mostly flat-brush work, and most students try to do it with a round and wonder why it looks laboured.

Taklon is a synthetic filament rather than natural hair, and for a flat that is an advantage rather than a compromise. A flat brush lives or dies on whether the end stays a clean straight line, and taklon holds that edge through washing far better than a soft natural hair, which splays.

Choosing a size is a question of area, not of skill. The 2 and the 4 are for edges and small blocks, the 6 to the 10 do most ordinary project work, and the 12 to the 16 are for covering ground quickly. Prices rise with the size, from Rs. 345 for the 2 to Rs. 620 for the 16, so there is no reason to buy bigger than the work needs.
