Each tube is printed Marie's, ACRYLIC, NO.815B, SINCE 1919, FINE QUALITY and 2.6fl.oz 75ml, with a holographic authenticity sticker beside the horse roundel.

The reason to buy singles is that nobody empties colours evenly. You will finish Titanium White three times before you finish Dioxazine Violet once, and a boxed set makes you buy thirty-five colours to replace one. What makes this range genuinely worth a page is the colour chart Marie's publishes, photographed here at full size. It lists 55 colours, and beside every one it prints a lightfastness rating in stars — from two to four. That is information most brands at this price do not give at all, and it changes what you should buy. The four-star colours will hold up: the whole earth range, 676 Yellow Ochre, 601 Raw Sienna, 684 Burnt Sienna, 681 Light Red, 678 Reddish Brown, 687 Burnt Umber, 689 Umber Deep and 690 Vandyke Brown, along with 445 Prussian Blue, 453 Cobalt Blue and 560 Viridian.

The two-star colours are the ones to think twice about. Marie's rates 402 Brilliant Purple, 458 Deep Blue, 795 Cold Grey and 796 Warm Grey at only two stars, which is the maker telling you plainly that those four will fade faster than the rest. For a poster, a prop or a school piece that does not matter. For a painting you intend to hang in a room with a window, it does — and Marie's deserves credit for printing it rather than leaving you to find out.

Two price bands apply. Standard colours are Rs. 399 a tube. The metallic and speciality shades — 121 Iridescent Silver, 132 Iridescent Gold and a small number of others — are Rs. 550, or Rs. 7.33 a millilitre.
