Ten discs, numbered 0 through 9, curve across the wall as the body of a caterpillar. A round black head leads with two yellow eyes, a blue smile and a pair of yellow antennae, and black legs step out from under the body between the segments. The numbers are white and large, and the discs alternate through blue, red and green so no two touching segments share a colour.

Starting at zero is the detail worth paying for. Most number displays open at one, which quietly teaches that counting begins there — and then a child meets zero as a strange exception later. Here zero is simply the first segment of the animal, sitting in the line where it belongs, and a class counting along the caterpillar meets it without anyone having to explain it.

The curve is what makes it a display rather than a chart. It arcs above a whiteboard or across the top of a wall, and because every disc is a separate piece the arc can be flattened, tightened or run in a straight line to fit the space you actually have. The head can face either way, so it can lead into a corner or away from a door.

Nursery classes use it as a number line they can walk along. Children touch each disc while counting aloud, which turns a wall decoration into something the whole room does together. That is also why the pieces need to survive contact — foam takes daily poking where a printed strip would be scuffed through by the second term.
