This is the boxed version of the reed qalam, and the box is doing more work than it looks. It is printed in three scripts — English across the top, قلم and سیٹ برائے خطاطی in Urdu down the face, and the Arabic line قلم الخيزران لكتابة الخط beneath it — which tells you at a glance that the set was put together for khatati rather than adapted from a craft pen. The five qalams inside are cut in different widths. Stand them together as our photograph does and the steps are plain: the narrowest at one end for ordinary lines, the broadest at the other for headings, and three between them.
