Rope, not string. This is jute cord — several strands twisted together into a thick, firm round cord — supplied as short hanks rather than as wound balls. The colour range is wide: our photographs show more than thirty shades, from black, white and greys through browns and tans to lime, teal, coral, magenta, purple and every ordinary primary.
Thickness is the whole difference between a cord and a twine, and it changes what the material can do. Twine ties things; cord holds a shape. A cord this heavy keeps a knot open instead of collapsing it, so knots read as pattern rather than as a tangle — which is the entire basis of macramé, plant hangers, wall hangings and bag handles. Sit the same knot in thin twine and it disappears.
