A coil of jute lace, wound flat and held with a pin. This is not woven cloth cut into a strip — it is crocheted, so the fibre runs in loops and chains with open holes between them, and the band has a scalloped structure along both edges instead of a cut line.

That difference decides what it can do. A cut ribbon has raw edges that fray and a solid face that hides whatever is under it. Crocheted lace has finished edges that never fray, and the holes let the surface underneath show through — so a band of it over kraft card reads as texture rather than as a patch stuck on.

The holes are also fixings. A jute cord, a satin ribbon, a length of twine or a tag string threads straight through the openwork without a punch or a needle, which is why this trim ends up on jar necks, invitation bands, favour boxes and photo frames — anywhere something has to be tied on and stay put.

It is the coarser, warmer half of a pair. The hessian-and-white-lace ribbon we also stock is soft and bridal; this one is all rope texture and no white at all, which suits a heavier, more handmade finish — hessian noticeboards, framed calligraphy, terracotta pots, a rustic centrepiece, the edge of a scrapbook page.
