Take the colour away and what is left is value — how light or dark a thing is — and value is what decides whether a drawing reads as solid or flat. This set is eight hard pastels that step from a near-black through a run of greys to white, which is a value scale you can hold in your hand. That is a specific way of working, not a limitation. Painters who cannot make a picture read correctly are usually getting value wrong rather than colour, and the standard cure is to spend time drawing without any colour at all. A grey set forces the issue: you cannot reach for a warm brown to fake depth, so you have to place the tone properly.

These are hard pastels, which matters as much as the colour. A hard stick is compressed firmly enough to hold a corner, so it draws a line and takes detail where a soft pastel would only crumble and fill. The box names them Pastel Carré — square pastel — and the square section gives a flat face for laying tone and a sharp edge for the line in the same stick.
