Hard pastels are a different tool from the soft ones on the same shelf, and buying the wrong kind is the commonest mistake in this category. A soft pastel crumbles on purpose so its powder can be blended by finger. A hard pastel is compressed firmly enough to keep a sharp corner, which means it draws a line, takes detail, and can be sharpened against a blade. You use soft pastels to fill and hard pastels to define.

Pastel Carré means square pastel — the same term Sakura uses on its Nouvel Carré sticks — and the sticks in our photographs are square in section with a white paper half-wrap.

Set against the grey version we also stock, this is the cheaper of the pair: Rs. 1,500 for eight sticks is Rs. 187.50 each, while the Grey Hard Pastels set is Rs. 1,850, or Rs. 231.25. Same brand, same count, same square format — the earth set costs 23% less, which is worth knowing if you were going to buy one and were not sure which.

One note on the packaging: our grey-tone box prints Bruynzeel's CRETACOLOR while this brown one prints Brevillier's. That is a change of company prefix between print runs on the same brand, not a sign that either box is wrong.
