It is a smooth round cylinder with a uniform surface — nothing like the knotted, bark-marked look of a natural charcoal twig — because compressed charcoal is milled charcoal pressed back into shape with a binder rather than a piece of burnt wood.
That difference in how it is made is the difference in how it draws. Natural charcoal sits loosely on the surface and lifts off. Compressed charcoal is denser, holds together under pressure, and pushes pigment into the tooth of the paper, which is why it reaches a depth of black that a willow stick simply cannot get to no matter how hard you press.
It is a finishing tool, and that is the honest way to use it.
