Description
One natural sea sponge, sold on its own. It is a soft honey-yellow, roughly domed on one face and open on the other, and every surface of it is a tangle of irregular openings — some the width of a pinhead, some wide enough to see through. Nothing about the shape is repeated anywhere else on the piece, which is the entire reason artists buy natural sponge instead of foam.
A manufactured foam has a regular cell structure, so pressing it twice gives you the same pattern twice, and a wall printed with it starts to look like wallpaper. A sea sponge cannot repeat itself. Every press lands a different arrangement of holes, so foliage on a tree reads as leaves rather than as a stamp, and stone, rust, moss, coral, cloud and old plaster all come out looking grown rather than printed.
In watercolour it does two jobs. Dipped in colour and pressed, it prints that broken texture. Squeezed dry and pressed onto a wet wash, it lifts colour out again in the same irregular pattern, which is how clouds are taken out of a sky without a hard edge anywhere in them.
Dry, a natural sponge is stiff and slightly brittle, and it should be soaked before its first use rather than pressed straight onto paper. A minute in clean water turns it soft, springy and about a third larger, and that is its working state. Squeeze it out gently rather than wringing it, because twisting is what tears the finer structure.
