Description
Three words on the label do the work here: non-clogging, pigmented, waterproof. Pigmented matters most. Most cheap inks are dye-based, which means the colour is dissolved and fades in daylight; pigment sits as solid particles in suspension, so the line keeps its depth for years. That is why the same label also says shake lightly before use — pigment settles, and a bottle left standing needs rousing before it writes evenly.
Waterproof is the second half of it. Once dry, a Calli line does not lift when a watercolour wash goes over it, which is what makes this the ink to use when lettering sits on top of painted work or when a card might meet a damp hand. Non-clogging is the practical third: it flows through a dip nib without gumming the slit between one dip and the next.
The bottle is 29.5ml — small in the hand, large in practice. A dip pen takes only what the nib and its well can hold, so a bottle this size outlasts a great deal of writing. It is the same ink for a bamboo qalam, a steel dip nib or a ruling pen.
Colours run Jet Black, Blue, Burgundy, Scarlet, Green Jet and Brown, all shown in our photograph. What does pigmented ink mean, and why does it matter?
Calli is pigmented, so the colour is carried as solid pigment particles held in suspension rather than dissolved as a dye. Pigment keeps its depth in daylight for years where dye fades, which is why artists' inks are pigmented. The trade-off is that pigment settles in the bottle, so it needs a light shake before use.
Is Calli ink really waterproof?
Once dry, yes — the Calli label states waterproof, and in practice a dried line does not lift when a wash goes over it. That is what lets you letter on top of watercolour work, or hand over a card that might meet damp fingers without the writing running.

Why does my line look uneven when I start a new bottle?
Usually the Calli pigment has settled. Shake the bottle lightly before use, as the label instructs, so the pigment is evenly suspended again. Writing straight from a bottle that has stood for weeks gives a thin, patchy line until it is roused.
