Paper sleeves are worth understanding rather than complaining about. The sleeve is what keeps the wax off small fingers and stops a crayon snapping under side pressure, and it is meant to be peeled back a few millimetres at a time as the tip wears down. Peeling the whole sleeve off at the start is what makes a crayon break in half an hour.

Wax crayon marks lift off a hard sealed surface with a dry cloth and then warm soapy water, and off fabric far less willingly, because the wax melts into the fibres. An apron and a covered table are worth more than any promise on a box, and neither costs anything.
