Description
The green Faber-Castell tin, printed since 1761 with the company's Nuremberg castle engraving, and a card reading 11 Pitt Graphite Matt — Graphite pencils and accessories. The card also carries an orange New flash whose line, translated from the German, is the whole point of the range: for reduced reflection on paper.
That flash names a problem every pencil artist has and almost nobody explains. Ordinary graphite is shiny. Lay down a dark area with a soft grade, tilt the page under a light, and the shadow flares silver — the darkest part of the drawing becomes the brightest thing on the sheet. It ruins photographs of the work, it ruins framed drawings under glass, and it is why so many careful pencil portraits look wrong the moment they leave the desk.
Matt graphite is formulated to cut that sheen. The darks stay dark from every angle, which matters most in exactly the grades where the problem is worst — the very soft ones a portrait or a still life is shaded with. If you have ever wondered why your reference photographs look better than your drawing, the glare is a large part of the answer.
The tin holds eleven pieces: eight graphite pencils and three accessories. The pencils run from 2B at one end of the tray to 12B at the other — a range that starts where an ordinary sketching pencil stops and goes down to a grade most shops do not stock at all. The accessories are a white paper stump for pushing tone into the paper, a metal sharpener, and a Faber-Castell Dust-Free eraser in its printed sleeve.
