The first thing to be clear about is that this is a refill, not a pencil. There is no barrel, no clip and no point — ten bare leads, 2 mm across, that go inside a clutch pencil you already own. A clutch pencil is worth understanding because it is the only pencil that never gets shorter. Instead of wood wrapped round a lead, it is a metal or plastic barrel with jaws in the nose; press the button, the jaws open, the lead drops through, and you sharpen the exposed tip in a separate lead pointer. The barrel stays exactly the same length from the day you buy it to the day you lose it, which is why architects and draughtsmen have used them for a century.

HB is the middle grade and the right default for a refill pack. It writes dark enough to read and erases cleanly, which is what a working drawing needs; the softer grades smudge across a sheet you are still leaning on, and the harder ones score the paper. If you are buying leads to keep in a drawer rather than for one specific job, HB is the grade to keep.
