One ribbon made of two materials. A band of natural hessian runs down the centre, and along both edges a white lace is joined to it — a fine scalloped lace on the outside, and a narrow woven tape where the two meet. Wound into a roll, the burlap centre and the white borders stack into clear stripes.

This is the single most recognisable material in rustic wedding decor, and the reason is the contrast. Hessian on its own reads rough and outdoorsy; white lace on its own reads formal and bridal. Put them together and you get both at once — warm and coarse in the middle, delicate at the edges — which is exactly the register a mehndi or a nikkah decoration is trying to hit.

It goes where a plain ribbon goes and does more with it: round a mason jar with a candle in it, banded across a wedding invitation, along the front of a cake table, round the stem of a bouquet, over the lid of a favour box, tied on the back of a chair, or looped into a bow for a door wreath. Because the lace edges are white, it reads clearly against brown paper, kraft card and terracotta — the surfaces jute is usually paired with.

The two-material build changes how you cut it. Hessian frays at a cut edge and lace does not, so a cut end will shed a few burlap threads while the lace stays closed. Cut it square, and if an end will be handled — a jar band, a chair tie — turn the last centimetre under and glue it so nothing keeps shedding.

It is the softer half of a pair on this site. Our crocheted jute lace is all natural fibre, coarse and handmade-looking; this one is the bridal version of the same idea.
