Water-based acrylic is what separates these from the oil-based paint markers on the shelf beside them. Acrylic behaves like paint that has been put into a pen: it goes down opaque, dries to a solid film, layers over itself once dry so a second colour can sit on top of a first, and washes off skin and out of a brush with water while it is still wet. That last point is why an acrylic marker is the one a school or a home craft table can live with.

Layering is the part people underestimate. With a dye marker, drawing yellow over blue gives green whether you wanted it or not. With acrylic, once the first pass is dry the second sits on top of it — so highlights go on last, a light colour can be written over a dark one, and a mistake can be painted out rather than started again. Rock painting, canvas shoes, tote bags, wooden name plaques, terracotta pots, glass jars and dark card all work on exactly that principle.

Now the part worth doing arithmetic on, because it goes the opposite way from most sets. Twelve is Rs. 2,650, which is about Rs. 221 a pen. Twenty-four is Rs. 5,200, which is about Rs. 217. The bigger box saves roughly two per cent per pen — nothing. Buy the 24 because you want twenty-four colours, particularly the tints and the neutrals a 12 cannot hold, and buy the 12 if the primaries plus black, white and a metallic will do. Do not buy the 24 expecting it to be the value option.

The carton itself is built to stand and open, with the pens visible in a row through the top window, so it works as the storage rather than being torn open and thrown away.
