At Rs. 550 the Boom large set is the cheapest way to get a full 30 inch wicket standing in your street. It is the set to buy when children have been using a chair, a school bag or a stack of bricks as stumps and you would like the arguments about whether that was out to stop.

It is white hard plastic with a black BOOM label on each of the three stumps, and the bails come with it. Hard plastic is the point of difference here: this set is built rigid and steady rather than flexible, so it stands square and does not lean the way a soft, whippy stump does once it has been knocked about.

The base is weighed down with sand or soil rather than water. That is worth knowing before you order — the Aqeel set at Rs. 600 takes water from a tap, which is easier to come by than a bag of sand. If you have a garden, a building site or a patch of dirt nearby, it makes no difference and you keep Rs. 50.

Boom recommend it for kids, and that is the right recommendation. At 30 inches the stumps are full height, so children get a proper target and a real game rather than a scaled-down one, but the plastic build keeps it harmless when someone runs into it chasing a single.

It arrives wrapped in plastic, so it comes to you clean and the pieces stay together. It sets up on any surface — concrete, tarmac, a school ground or grass — and packs away just as quickly.
