A 20 ml bottle with a long white needle spout, carrying Marabu's red-and-black label and the product name in three languages — ALCOHOL INK / ENCRE À L'ALCOOL / TINTA DE ALCOHOL. Each colour has its own number printed on a coloured disc: Black 073, Cherry Red 031, the blue printed as Gention 057, Lemon 020, Metallic Gold 784 and Metallic Silver 782. Alcohol ink does not behave like any other colour in this shop, and that is the whole point of it. It is transparent dye carried in alcohol, so it dries in seconds, and while it is still wet a drop of alcohol pushes it around: colours bloom into each other, spread in feathered edges, and leave the marbled, cloudy pattern that nobody can draw on purpose. The technique is essentially controlled accident, which is why the results look nothing like painting.

It needs a surface that will not absorb it. On paper it soaks straight in and dies. On something non-porous — synthetic yupo paper, glazed tile, glass, acrylic sheet, metal, resin, the inside of a phone case — the ink stays on the surface and keeps moving until the alcohol has gone. That is where alcohol ink coasters, resin jewellery, painted tiles and ink-bloom bookmarks all come from.

The two metallics are the reason a set like this earns its price. Metallic Gold 784 and Metallic Silver 782 float on top of a colour rather than mixing into it, so a gold thread can be dropped across a red bloom and stay gold — the effect that makes alcohol-ink coasters and resin work look expensive.

It is sold one bottle at a time at Rs. 1,200, which is the sensible way to start. Two colours and a metallic will teach you more about how the ink moves than six bottles will, and the technique matters far more than the palette.

This one carries real hazard marking, and we will not soften it: the label shows the health-hazard and flammable pictograms with the words WARNING! DANGER.
