This is Marie's widest acrylic box on our shelf, and it comes in the brand's older domestic livery rather than the grey Painting Colours carton: torn blocks of red, blue, green and yellow with the black horse mark, 馬利牌 above MARIE'S, and 丙烯画颜料 above ACRYLIC COLOUR. The count is printed small on the front as 36 COLOURS, and the tubes sit in a white moulded tray three rows deep.
Thirty-six colours is a lot of paint to be handed at once, and it changes how you work. With a range this wide you stop mixing and start selecting, which is quicker but teaches you less — the tube codes visible in our photographs run from 104 Titanium White through 315 Crimson, 443 Ultramarine, 560 Viridian and 601 into the earths, and on to 793 Lamp Black. Marie's has been making colours in Shanghai since 1919, and the horse mark on this box is the brand's oldest. As with the rest of the range there is no pigment documentation — no colour index numbers, no lightfastness ratings, no opacity marks — which is the trade at this price and normal for a student acrylic.
One note on the photographs: one of them shows the open box alongside a white flower palette and two brushes. Those are there to show scale and are not part of the pack. What you receive is the box and its thirty-six tubes.
