A plain red apron cut for a child. It goes over the head on a fixed neck strap, ties at the back with two long waist tapes, and carries one wide patch pocket across the front. The fabric is the lightweight lustrous weave the owner lists as parachute — smooth and slightly reflective rather than matt — and there is no printed label, badge or branding anywhere on it.

An apron is the cheapest thing on a whole art shelf and the one that decides whether painting happens at all. The calculation is familiar to any parent hesitating over poster colours at the dining table: the paint costs a couple of hundred rupees and the shalwar kameez costs a great deal more. It is a bib apron rather than a waist one, and for a child that is the only shape worth buying. Children paint leaning forward with the work close under the chin, so a dropped brush hits the chest and a knocked water pot soaks the front of the shirt. A waist apron protects the half that was never in danger. The bib here runs from the neck to below the knee, which is the area that actually collects the mess.
