The extra sponge is not decoration. A sponge is what you blot a loaded brush on before it goes near paper, and with thirty-six pans crowded into one tray there is far more chance of carrying yesterday's green into today's yellow. Two of them means one can be kept for lifting and one for cleaning.

On price, be clear which way the arithmetic runs. Rs. 6,200 for thirty-six pans is Rs. 172.22 a pan. Our Koi 24 box is Rs. 3,900, or Rs. 162.50 a pan. The twelve additional colours cost Rs. 2,300 and raise the price of every pan by about ten rupees, so this is the box to buy for the range, not for the value.

It is still cheap for what it is. Rs. 172.22 a pan undercuts our Daler-Rowney Aquafine Studio Set at Rs. 337.50 and our Winsor & Newton Cotman box at Rs. 729.17, and neither of those brings a water brush. Against a single Koi refill pan at Rs. 255, every colour in this box is well under what one costs on its own.

The format is the same one that makes the Koi range worth carrying: a folding white box with the pans, the mixing wells and a refillable brush all inside, so a painting kit is one object rather than four. The carton prints Ideal for Plein Air painting, and the whole design follows from that.
