This is the cheapest paint on our watercolour shelf, and it is not close. Twelve twelve-millilitre tubes make 144 ml for Rs. 610, which is Rs. 4.24 a millilitre. Our TiTi Water Colors set is Rs. 10.35 a millilitre, and it is the next cheapest thing here. Per tube the gap is smaller but still real: Rs. 50.83 against Rs. 62.08.

The reason is the tube size rather than any trick. Most cheap sets use 6 ml tubes; these hold twice that, so the same twelve colours carry double the paint. If what you need is a lot of colour for posters, school projects or a class of children working through a term, volume is the number that matters and this box has the most of it.

The twelve run a pale cream, a lemon yellow and a deep yellow, then a rose, a red and an orange, then violet, green and turquoise, then blue, a deep maroon and black. There is a black and a near-white at the two ends, so shades and tints do not have to be improvised out of the middle of the range.

The carton calls itself High Quality and Specially for painter, and describes the range as Home & Work Shop, Fine for Art and Craft. That is the maker's wording. What we can tell you from the photographs is what the box actually holds: twelve tubes, one brush, and a tray that keeps them in order.
