A white folding box the size of a paperback, holding twenty-four half pans in four rows of six. A refillable water brush lies in its own channel below them and a small black sponge clips in beside the pans. The lid opens into five mixing wells and the tray below adds three more. The carton lists the contents without ambiguity: 24 colors, half-pans, 9ml refillable Water Brush, 1 sponge.

The water brush is the reason this box is different from every other pan set on the shelf. Its barrel holds nine millilitres of water and feeds the bristles as you squeeze, so there is no jar to carry, no jar to knock over, and nothing to find when you sit down on a wall to paint. The carton says Ideal for Plein Air painting, and for once the packaging claim describes the actual design rather than decorating it.

Rs. 3,900 for twenty-four pans is Rs. 162.50 a pan, and that makes it the cheapest artist half pan we sell. Our Daler-Rowney Aquafine Studio Set is Rs. 337.50 a pan and our Winsor & Newton Cotman box is Rs. 729.17. Even our own Koi half pan refills are dearer at Rs. 255 each — buying the whole box works out cheaper per colour than replacing pans one at a time.

It is also cheaper per pan than the bigger Koi. Our 36-colour Pocket Field Sketch Box is Rs. 6,200, which is Rs. 172.22 a pan. Twelve extra colours cost Rs. 2,300 and push the price of every pan up by about ten rupees, so the 24 is the better arithmetic unless you specifically want the wider range.

The twenty-four run a white, two yellows, an orange, an orange-red and a magenta across the top, then reds into a wine and two purples, then blues, teals and greens, and finally an ochre, three browns and a black. That is a landscape and a street scene without mixing anything you cannot already see in the tray.
