Most kneaded erasers are grey. The Sakura Nouvel is white, and that is the first thing artists notice about it. It matters more than it sounds: a white eraser shows you exactly how much charcoal it has taken up, so you can see when to fold it and bring a clean face back out.

The wrapper states the job plainly — Kneaded Eraser, Good for Charcoal — and also carries a non PVC marking. Sakura is a Japanese manufacturer, and the pack is labelled in Japanese alongside the English, with recycling symbols for the paper band and the PP film.

The block measures roughly 7.3 x 3.4 cm before you touch it. Half a minute in the hand and it will hold whatever shape you give it: a flat disc for lifting broad tone, a wedge for working into a corner, or a drawn-out point for pulling a single highlight out of dense shading.

It works by adhesion rather than abrasion. Press it onto charcoal or graphite and the medium comes away with it. There is no rubbing, so the paper tooth survives and nothing crumbs onto the sheet — which matters most in charcoal, where one careless sweep of a hand can smear an hour of work.

White does have one consequence worth knowing about: it starts to look dirty sooner than a grey eraser would. That is cosmetic, not functional. Knead the soiled surface inward, a clean white face returns, and the piece keeps working long after it has stopped looking new.
