Nib width is not a detail here, it is the entire difference between this pen and the slim 1.8 mm. A 1.8 writes a line of text across a card. A 5.0 writes a word. Headings, a name board for a stall, a title across the top of a mounted project, a banner for a school event, the front of a dark gift bag, a chalkboard-style menu — these are jobs where the letter has to read from the back of a room, and a fine chisel simply cannot make one.

There is a real reason to want the broad size specifically for lettering rather than just for scale. The whole beauty of chisel calligraphy is the contrast between a thick downstroke and a hairline cross-stroke, and that contrast is set by the width of the flat. At 1.8 mm it is visible; at 5.0 mm it is dramatic. Letters that look merely tidy in the small size look designed in the large one.

The trade is honest and predictable: a broad nib puts down several times the paint per letter, so a 5.0 empties faster than a 1.8 doing the same amount of work, and it needs a surface with room to work on. It is the wrong pen for a place card and the right one for the board above the table.
