Anyone who has queued at a bakery for fresh buns will recognise this one. It is a round, golden-brown bun with a darker baked top and a paler base, speckled all over with white and black sesame-style seeds, sitting snugly inside a white mesh net that ties off at a plastic hanging loop.

The sesame bun squishy is soft enough to fold almost in half. Push a thumb into the crust and it sinks deep, the net stretching with it, and the bun slowly puffs back up into a dome. Because the net stays on, you squeeze the bun through it, which gives a slightly textured grip and keeps the soft surface from being scratched.

The loop at the top means it can hang from a school bag hook or a peg on a bedroom wall, and it looks convincing enough that adults pick it up expecting bread. Children use it for play kitchens and pretend bakeries as well as for squeezing.
