Sable is the reason to want this rather than another synthetic. Natural sable hair has a natural taper and a scaled surface, so a sable head holds far more water for its size and lets it go slowly and evenly — which is exactly what a watercolour wash asks for. A synthetic dumps its load early and runs dry in the middle of a stroke; a sable keeps giving to the end of the line.

The second thing sable does is come back. Press a good sable head down and lift it, and the point reforms on its own — the spring is in the hair itself, not in a manufacturing shape that gradually washes out. That is what makes a sable brush an instrument you keep rather than a consumable you replace.

Three sizes is the sensible shape for a watercolour set: one to draw with, one to paint with, one to wash with. The card labels them exactly that way — fine, medium and broad — rather than giving a size number, so what you are buying is a working spread rather than three arbitrary numbers.

Rs. 2,750 for the set. Against the Cotman synthetic rounds stocked here, where a single size 8 alone is Rs. 3,250, three natural sable brushes at this price is the cheaper way into a watercolour kit — but the two are not the same thing, and neither replaces the other on the page.

Sable earns its care. Rinse it in clean water before the paint sets, draw the head through your fingers to reform the point, never leave it standing on the point in a jar, and store it dry and flat. A sable looked after this way outlives every synthetic in the pot.
