This is a wash brush, not a detail brush. It is sold one at a time in seven widths — sizes 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 and 80 — so you buy the width the job needs instead of a set where four of the brushes never come out of the jar.

The wide sizes earn their keep on anything that has to be covered evenly: a sky behind a landscape, a base coat on a canvas board, gesso on a fresh surface, or the background colour on a school chart. Working a large area with a small brush leaves overlap marks where each stroke dries against the last, and no amount of care fixes that afterwards. One pass with a wide flat brush avoids the problem instead of hiding it.

For school and college chart work this is the brush most students are actually looking for. A size 70 or 80 covers a full chart-paper background in a handful of strokes, and the flat edge gives clean borders and straight colour blocks without masking tape.

The narrower sizes have a different job. A size 20 or 30 flat holds a crisp straight edge for boundaries, lettering blocks and tidying up where a wash met a line it should not have crossed. Between the ends of the range, a 40 or 50 is the general-purpose width most painters reach for first.

Every brush has a flat black handle with the size printed above the word Corot, and a riveted metal ferrule that clamps the golden filament flat rather than gathering it into a round. That flat clamp is what keeps the square edge crisp through a long wash.
