A rigger is the brush you buy when a thin line keeps breaking. Its hair is unusually long for the width of the head, and that length is not decoration — it is a reservoir. A loaded rigger carries enough paint to draw a line right across a page in one movement, where a short-haired detail brush runs dry a third of the way and leaves a join you can see from across the room.

The name is literal. Ship painters needed a brush that could put in the rigging — dozens of long unbroken cables — without reloading between each one, and the shape stuck. The modern uses are the same problem in other subjects: bare tree branches, telephone wires, grass, whiskers, boat masts, the fine lines in architectural work, and script lettering.

The technique is different from a normal round, and it is worth knowing before you buy. Load the whole length of the hair, hold the brush more upright than usual, and let the tip trail across the surface rather than pressing into it. Pressure is what fattens the line; a rigger rewards a light hand and a steady arm more than a strong grip.

Three sizes are offered — 1, 2 and 3. All three are fine, and the number changes the line weight rather than the job: size 1 for the thinnest hair-lines, size 3 when the line needs a little more presence or a little more paint in one loading.
