A fan brush does two jobs, and they are opposites. Held flat and swept lightly across a boundary, it softens a hard edge into a gradient — the join between sky and hill disappears. Held on its tips and dragged, the same splayed hairs leave dozens of separate fine lines at once: grass, fur, hair, pine needles, the streaks in a cloud.

That second use is the reason most painters buy one. Painting a hundred blades of grass with a round brush takes an afternoon and still looks drawn. One dragged pass with a fan leaves a hundred lines that vary naturally in weight, because the hairs themselves vary.

The head is deliberately thin. A fan holds very little paint, and that is what lets it blend rather than deposit — load it too heavily and it stops softening and starts painting stripes. The usual mistake with a new fan brush is putting too much colour on it.

Three sizes are offered, 2, 4 and 6, each sold on its own. The size 2 is for small areas — hair on a portrait, texture on a single tree. The 6 spreads far wider and suits skies, fields and anything where the softening has to cover ground.

The build is a black handle with a blue band at the ferrule and a bright nickel ferrule pressed flat to hold the hairs in their fan. The head is a golden synthetic filament.
