A shader is a flat brush with short hair, and the shortness is the point. Long-haired flats hold more paint and flex under pressure; a shader stays stiff, so the amount of colour it puts down depends on you rather than on how far the hair happens to bend. That control is what shading needs.

The Aquafine flat shader is built for the moment when a shape already has its base colour and now needs to turn — the shadow under a fold, the darker side of a leaf, the edge of a face. Load lightly, tap out the excess and work the colour outward in short passes. A long-haired flat floods that job; a shader lets you creep up on it.

Its square end also cuts a genuinely straight edge. Turned side-on it gives a clean line, which is useful for panel borders, window frames in an architectural sketch, or squaring off a background against a subject.

Three sizes are offered — 2, 6 and 10 — each sold on its own. The 2 is for small shapes and tight shading, the 6 covers most general work, and the 10 handles larger areas where you still want the control a shader gives.

The build is a black handle with a bright blue band at the ferrule and a bright nickel ferrule, and each handle is printed Flat Shader with Aquafine and DALER ROWNEY, and the size marked alongside.
