A squat glass jar with a black screw cap, from the Daler-Rowney Simply range. The label prints the name in four languages — Black India Ink, Encre de Chine, Indische Tusche, Tinta China — and what is in the jar is a properly dense black rather than the thin blue-black of writing ink.
Our photographs make the point better than any adjective. Poured out, the ink sits as a glossy black bead that reflects the light off its surface, and drawn out with a brush it holds a thick stroke at one end while tapering to a hairline at the other without going grey. That is the whole reason artists buy India ink: it is opaque enough to read as solid black on the first pass, so a line does not have to be gone over twice.
One warning is worth more than any feature on this page: never fill a fountain pen with India ink. It carries solids that a fountain pen's feed cannot handle, and it dries hard inside the channel, which is how a good pen is destroyed in a single afternoon. Fountain pens take fountain-pen ink; this jar takes a nib.
For calligraphy the same rule points the other way. No, and this is the one thing not to get wrong. India ink carries solid particles that clog a fountain-pen feed and dry hard inside it. Use a dip nib, a ruling pen or a brush, and keep fountain-pen ink for fountain pens.

It is far denser and opaque, so a line reads as solid black immediately instead of as a thin grey-black. Writing ink is made to flow through a pen feed; India ink is made to sit on the paper.
