System 3 is Daler-Rowney's artists' acrylic line, and the reason to buy it single-tube rather than by the box is the range: more than forty colours, from Zinc White 006 and Titanium White 009 through Cobalt Blue 110, Prussian Blue 134, Phthalo Turquoise 154, Hookers Green 352, Deep Violet 408, Cadmium Red 503, Yellow Ochre 663 and Rich Gold 707, down to Mars Black 036. You buy the colour you have run out of, by number.
Every tube prints three things that student ranges usually leave off: the colour name in four languages, a Daler-Rowney colour number, and — beside them — an opacity symbol and a lightfastness rating in stars. Ultramarine 123 carries three stars; the fluorescent colours carry one. That is the whole point of an artists' grade. You are not being sold a colour, you are being told how it will behave and how long it will last.
