A filbert is a flat brush with the corners rounded off, and that small change is the whole point of it. A flat leaves two hard corner marks at the end of every stroke. A filbert leaves none, so colour can be laid, moved and softened without stopping to blend out the edges afterwards.

Nine of them come on one card, stepping from a broad head down to a narrow one. Painters who work in oils or heavy acrylic often use almost nothing else, because the same head that blocks in a large shape will, turned on its side, draw a surprisingly fine line.

It is the natural brush for anything with a curved edge — petals, leaves, cheeks, clouds, folds in cloth. A flat fights those shapes and a round has to be built up in strokes; a filbert simply follows the curve, which is why portrait and still-life painters reach for it first.

Every handle is black with a chrome ferrule, printed Keep Smiling with the model number 803, on the KeepSmiling card that carries a printed Mona Lisa across its header. The heads are synthetic and springy, which suits acrylic and oil better than a soaking watercolour wash. They also survive being scrubbed at, which matters: a filbert earns its keep on the second and third layer of a painting, not the first.
