Four brushes is the honest answer to what a beginner actually needs. Mont Marte builds the Discovery range for exactly that, and this pack states its contents on the back rather than leaving them to be guessed: rounds in sizes 2, 4 and 8, and one flat in size 10.

The three rounds are the working brushes. A round holds a point at the tip and a belly of paint behind it, so the same brush outlines a shape and then fills it. Stepping through three sizes means moving from a broad shape to a fine edge without ever changing the way the brush behaves under the hand.

The size 10 flat is there for everything the rounds are slow at. The pack says it plainly: good for broad strokes, it holds a lot of paint, and thin lines can be painted when the side of the brush is used. That last one is the trick most beginners have to be told — a flat turned onto its narrow edge draws a line finer than any of the rounds.

Handles are light blue with silver ferrules, sized for a student's hand rather than an easel. Mont Marte's own description calls the Discovery sets a great first step for art students and suitable for a range of mediums, which matches what the shapes here can do: poster colour, acrylic and watercolour on paper.

The back of the pack also carries the care instruction, and it is worth following: rinse the colour out thoroughly in warm water and re-shape the head when finished. Brushes at this price die from dried paint at the base of the hair, not from use.
