Gesso is the white primer that goes on a canvas or board before any paint does, and it is hard on a brush. It is thick, it is slightly abrasive, and it sets hard if you let it. Painting it on with a good brush is how a good brush dies, which is why gesso brushes exist as a separate, cheaper, wider thing.

The three in this set step up in width, so a small board and a large canvas each get a brush sized for the job. Priming wants speed and evenness rather than control: the fewer passes a coat takes, the flatter it dries, and the flatter the primer, the less the first layer of paint fights you.
