A fat liner is a liner that stopped compromising. An ordinary liner has long thin hair — good for a continuous line, but thin hair holds thin paint, so the line still fades before you want it to. A fat liner keeps the long point and puts a full belly behind it, so the same stroke carries several times the colour and simply does not run out where the ordinary one does.

You feel the difference on the second half of a stroke. With a normal liner the line thins and greys as the head empties, and you learn to plan strokes around it. With these the line stays the weight you started with, which is why lettering artists and watercolour painters pay for them.
