A stencil brush looks wrong until you understand it. The bristles are cut flat across the top, packed tight and left short and stiff — the opposite of every painting brush — because a stencil is not painted, it is dabbed. Colour goes on with the brush held straight up and pushed down, so the paint stays on top of the cut-out and does not creep under the edge.

That creeping is what ruins stencilled work, and it is caused by two things: too much paint on the brush, and a stroke that pushes sideways. A flat top fixes the second. Load lightly, tap the excess off on a scrap, hold the brush upright and pounce straight down, and the edge comes out as sharp as the cut in the stencil.

Three sizes come in the set — 6, 8 and 10 — each printed on its own wooden handle. The 6 works inside small shapes and letters, the 10 covers a large area in fewer dabs, and the 8 does most of the work in between.

The handles are short and rounded rather than long, so the brush is held like a stamp with the whole hand over it. That grip is what lets you push straight down with control instead of dragging.

Natural bristle is used here rather than soft synthetic. Stiffness is the point: a soft head bends sideways under a downward push and carries paint under the stencil edge, which is exactly the fault the shape exists to avoid.
