Description
The same orange-lidded Marie's carton, one size up: 18 COLOURS across the top and three rows of six studio tubes laid in a moulded white tray. The tubes are silver aluminium with white screw caps and carry the printed shade name on each label, the same system as the twelve-colour box.
This is the box to buy in the range, and the arithmetic says so plainly. At Rs. 1,570 it is Rs. 87.22 a tube. Our Marie's set of 12 is Rs. 1,275, or Rs. 106.25 a tube. The step up costs Rs. 295 and adds six tubes - Rs. 49.17 each, less than half what a tube costs you in the smaller box. Buying up genuinely saves money here, which is not true of every ladder on our shelf.
The extra six is where an eighteen earns its keep. A twelve gives you one of each family and forces mixing for everything else. Eighteen adds the second yellow, the extra earth and the mid greens and blues that stop a landscape looking like it was mixed from four tubes. The tray runs white and cream through yellows and a gold ochre, oranges, reds and a deep crimson, three browns, greens including a turquoise, and blues down to a black.
Marie's prints no millilitre volume on this carton or on the tubes, so we publish no per-millilitre figure - only what we can count. For the same reason we do not rank this box against our Marie's Oil Color set of 24 in the blue O-2024B carton: that is a different range with visibly smaller tubes, so comparing them per tube would mislead you rather than help.
It behaves like a traditional oil: stiff enough to hold a brush mark, thinned with turpentine or a painting medium rather than water, and dry to the touch over days rather than minutes. We stock turpentine from Rs. 200 and linseed oil from Rs. 299. Paint it on canvas, canvas board or another primed ground - raw paper will eventually show the oil through.
