Description
Acrylic Medium Gloss is the bottle you reach for when acrylic paint is doing the right thing except for the finish. Stirred into colour it loosens the paint and dries to a shiny film instead of the flat, slightly chalky surface tube acrylic leaves on its own. Our photographs show it doing both jobs: brushed out on its own it lies down as a clear, wet-looking stroke, and stirred into red acrylic it turns the colour into a glossy swirl that still reads as red rather than as pink.
The important difference from water is that the medium carries its own binder. Water thins acrylic by diluting the glue that holds pigment to the canvas, so a heavily watered wash can lift or powder later. Gloss medium thins it by adding more of the same acrylic base, so the layer stays as tough as neat paint and simply becomes more transparent and shinier. That is the whole reason a glazing layer is built with medium and not from the tap.

Acrylic mediums are milky when wet and clear when dry, so the white you see through the neck is expected. Test a stroke on scrap paper and let it dry fully before judging how a mix will look on the canvas.
Will it work with student acrylics or only artist grade?
It mixes with acrylic colour generally, including the student-grade acrylic sets we stock. Thinner student paints usually need less medium to reach the same flow, so add it a little at a time.
Is this the same thing as a varnish?
