The nib is what makes these calligraphy pens rather than coloured markers, and the label names it: a fine chisel. A chisel is a flat blade rather than a point, so the width of the line depends entirely on which way the stroke travels — pull it down and you get the full width of the blade, pull it sideways and you get a hairline. That contrast between thick and thin is what makes lettering read as calligraphy instead of as neat handwriting, and no round-tipped pen can produce it at any price.

Twelve colours changes what calligraphy is for. A black dip pen and a bottle of ink is a discipline; a wallet of twelve chisel colours is a tool for making things — birthday cards, name tags for a mehndi table, a hand-lettered banner, chapter headings in a notebook, labels for storage jars, place cards for a walima. It is the difference between practising a script and using one.

Water based is printed on both the label and every barrel, and it is the reason this set can sit on a study table. A solvent calligraphy marker fills a closed room with fumes within minutes and bleeds through ordinary paper; a water-based one does neither. The label also carries NON TOXIC — that is Mungyo's own printed mark, which we quote as printed rather than as a Pakistani certification.

It sits at the accessible end of a shelf that runs a long way on this site.
