This is the set on our shelf that quietly does something none of its price rivals do: it prints the pigment index code for every single colour, in small type under the name, on the tube itself. Twelve tubes of 20 ml, in a white and rainbow carton marked The Fine Quality SAKURA ACRYLIC COLOR with 20ml x 12colors and the Japanese アクリル絵具 beneath.
The twelve, with the codes exactly as printed: #50 Titanium White PW6, #3 Lemon Yellow PY3, #7 Yellow Ochre PY43, #12 Burnt Sienna PR101, #18 Vermillion PR170, #19 Crimson Red PR21, #24 Purple PV23, #36 Cobalt Blue PB28, #37 Prussian Blue PB27, #27 Yellow Green PG7/PY3, #29 Viridian PG7 and #49 Mars Black PBk11.
Two of those deserve pointing at. **#36 Cobalt Blue is PB28** — genuine cobalt aluminate, not an imitation. Cobalt is an expensive pigment, so nearly every student set on our shelf substitutes a cheap phthalo mix and labels it Cobalt Blue Hue; our Faber-Castell set does exactly that, and costs more per millilitre than this one. **#37 Prussian Blue is PB27**, the real iron-based pigment rather than a phthalo stand-in. Getting either at this price is unusual; getting both is why this page exists.
On price, twelve 20 ml tubes is 240 ml, so Rs. 2,495 works out to Rs. 207.92 a tube and Rs. 10.40 a millilitre. That is mid-table on our shelf — dearer than Marie's, Keep Smiling and Art Rangers, cheaper than our Faber-Castell 12-set at Rs. 13.89 and far cheaper than Daler-Rowney System 3 at Rs. 23.73. Against Faber-Castell in particular the comparison is stark: Sakura is 25% cheaper per millilitre and gives you real cobalt where Faber-Castell gives you a hue.
Why does the pigment code matter at all? Because it tells you what will happen when you mix and how the colour will age. Two tubes both called Purple can behave completely differently; PV23 is dioxazine, which is transparent and staining, and knowing that saves you a ruined passage. It is the single most useful piece of information a paint label can carry, and most sets at this price simply do not carry it.
