This is a finishing varnish for acrylic paintings, and the label is unusually specific about which family it belongs to. The black band reads WINSOR & NEWTON, GALERIA, ACRYLIC MEDIUMS, and the yellow band beneath names the product six times over in six languages — Matt Varnish, Vernis Mat, Barniz Mate, Mattfirnis, Matte Vernis, Matt Fernissa — with the volume as 75mL ℮ 2.5 U.S. fl. oz.
A matt varnish exists to take shine away. Acrylic paint dries at inconsistent sheens across a canvas — some passages glossy, some flat, depending on how much medium and water went into each — and a varnish coat evens that out into one surface. Matt is the choice when reflections are the problem: work that will hang under a tube light or near a window, dark paintings where glare swallows the detail, and anything being photographed for a portfolio.
It is supplied in a small moulded glass bottle with a ribbed white screw cap, and the varnish inside reads pale rather than water-clear through the glass. When is the painting ready to varnish?
Only when it is completely dry all the way through, not just touch dry. Applying Galeria Acrylic Matt Varnish over paint that is still curing traps moisture under the coat, and a varnish layer is not something to take back off.
